I'm looking forward to learning more dives and to compete all that I've learned in a short time at my best.  I hope to become a collegiate diver with a university team, where I plan to study Psychology when I graduate in 2019.

Maya originally began recreational gymnastics classes due to her natural desire to climb counters, doors, door jams, etc. as a toddler.  She was a very successful gymnast winning State and Regional titles throughout her JO compulsory and Optionals career up through Level 9 (see achievements below).  After winning 1st on Beam and All Around at S. Cal State and 2nd on Bars Regionals, she placed 7th All Around qualifying for Western Nationals.  She was successfully training Level 10 when she tore her ACL on a double twist on Floor Exercise.

After Maya recovered from ACL surgery in March 2015, she continued to train and competed bars at S. Cal State in 2016.  In February 2017, we decided as a family to have her leave the sport she had known her whole life with a very heavy heart.  However, after her 1st dryland dive practice, she discovered how much fun diving could be and has been diving ever since.

Since Maya has been diving since March 2017, nearly every aspect in her life has improved to which the whole family is grateful.  Diving seems to have given Maya not only the freedom and confidence to come into her own through voice and spirit, but a family of friends and teammates that bring laughter and support.

She looks forward to learning and improving more dives, even though through the patient assistance of Coach Chen, she has managed to learn enough dives to compete JO in the oldest age group, in just under a year.  Maya is beyond excited to have been accepted into the Psychology Department at the University of Illinois, Chicago and has committed as a future Flames diver!
